Twitter rumor mill: Has Assad “abandoned” Syria?; Updated!/CardBertone/status/178745126984761344!/CardBertone/status/178746033394827264

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone is the Vatican’s number two official.

Not many newspeople are up tonight, but an Italian Twitter user has already tipped the Wall Street Journal:

@WSJ President Assad left Syria tonight, according to Vatican source. Is it true?

— Roberto Savarese (@rsavarese2006) March 11, 2012

A French independent journalist is also awake and asking questions:

Le Vatican, via le cardinal Bertone @CardBertone annonce que #Assad aurait quitté la #Syrie. Quelqu'un d'autre peut confirmer ?

— Liliane Langellier (@LaLangelliere) March 11, 2012

For what it’s worth, this piece says “Assad is firmly in charge of Syria,” according to “U.S. intelligence:”

One year after the unrest in Syria started President Bashar Assad is still firmly in control of his country, US intelligence services say, despite their leaders claiming his regime is doomed.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, three US senior intelligence officials have said Assad holds a strong position in Syria and his inner circle is also very determined to back the cause and remain “steadfast,” AP reports.

The U.N.’s Kofi Annan had been scheduled to hold a second meeting with Assad after being rebuffed earlier Saturday:

A U.N. official in Syria says envoy Kofi Annan will hold a second meeting with the country’s President Bashar Assad to discuss proposals for stopping violence and starting a political dialogue.

In his talks with Assad on Saturday, Annan made several proposals but was rebuffed by the president who rejected any immediate negotiations with the opposition.

The official said Annan is scheduled to meet again with Assad Sunday before heading to the Gulf state of Qatar. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Activists said fresh violence erupted again in Syria’s northern Idlib province.

UPDATE: The Bertone Twitter account is apparently fake:

Le Twitter account du Cardinal Bertone @CardBertone est un FAKE. Je l'ai signalé aux autorités compétentes et aux medias catholiques.

Someone’s got a lot of time of his/her hands to be faking the Vatican Secretary of State’s Twitter identity…

Benghazi docs delivered to Congress redacted to point of worthlessness

Teamobama dumped heavily redacted #Benghazi documents late on a Friday afternoon, which can only mean they’re hiding something BIG. #tcot

— John C. Pechette (@heatpacker) March 1, 2013

We know from CBS News’ Sharyl Attkisson the stonewalling she’s faced while trying to gain access to documents and photos surrounding the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya. Investigators in Congress haven’t had much luck getting information, either. Fox News’ Chad Pergram is tweeting details this afternoon about the information that was provided to the Senate Intelligence Committee, with a source telling him that hundreds of pages were fully redacted. It seems the most transparent administration ever has a heavy touch with an opaque marker.

Source tells Fox that #Benghazi “talking points” documents delivered to Senate Intel Cmte were so heavily redacted they were “worthless.”

— Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) March 1, 2013

Source on #Benghazi docs sent to Congress: “There were some documents that were 100 pages with every word on the page redacted.”

— Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) March 1, 2013

1st wave of #Benghazi documents delivered Tues were retrieved. Less heavily redacted set of documents redelivered to Senate Intel Cmte Thurs

— Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) March 1, 2013

#Benghazi docs sent to Hill show email traffic on “talking points.” Passed through WH, FBI, State & CIA.

— Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) March 1, 2013

@chadpergram In other words consensus on how to misinform the country….classic.

— Enriqueta Turanzas (@EnriquetaT) March 1, 2013

Ah yes, the talking points about a spontaneous protest over a YouTube video getting out of hand. What difference, at this point, does it make that there was no such protest?

Source says #Benghazi talking points docs delivered to Congress show “heavy editing by the DCI” who at the time was David Petraeus.

— Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) March 1, 2013

Source on #Benghazi talking points docs sent to Congress: “The word ‘attacks’ was changed to ‘demonstration,’” the source said.

— Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) March 1, 2013

@chadpergram Wow.

— Victor (@vicnewyork) March 1, 2013

@chadpergram That makes me angry. It was an ATTACK. Future generations won’t have a clue what happened. This is not a good thing.

— catherine annette (@anantucketlady) March 1, 2013

Give’um hell @chadpergram. We need to hold the responsible accountable.

Will this story pick up steam? It is Friday afternoon, after all.

Benghazi, pardons, Keystone. Lots of unhappy reporters this Friday pm.

— Matthew Miller (@matthewamiller) March 1, 2013

Yeah, it might be up to the public to keep this alive via social media.

If Benghazi docs are getting dumped today, it’s cause they expect us to stay stuck on #sequestration. Prove em wrong, ok?

— Ms. Navillus (@SalaciousSully) March 1, 2013

We have to give some sort of prize to Roll Call’s Steven Dennis for predicting tonight’s Benghazi news dump.

I called Benghazi. Really, I did. #FridayNewsDump

— Steven Dennis (@StevenTDennis) March 1, 2013

Yes, he really did, an hour earlier.

Friday news dump deluxe at WH today. Keystone, pardons. What next? Benghazi talking points mea culpa?
